Disadvantages of Delaying Knee Replacement Surgery

knee replacement surgery

Traditional knee replacement surgery can be very complicated. During a total knee replacement, the end of the femur is removed and replaced with a metal shell, which makes the surgery very difficult and complex. However, Dr Ashwani Maichand, a leading orthopaedist, states that knee replacement performed through MIS (minimal invasive surgery) technique is very convenient, as there are no complications attached to it,and the patient starts walking from the next day.

Knee replacement surgery not only improves mobility, but also provides freedom from pain. A number of patients have been benefitted from this surgery. But, what if the knee replacement surgery is delayed by a patient?

Delaying knee replacement surgery is not a good option. Many patients delay the surgery due to multiple reasons like financial apprehension, lack of awareness and previous experience within the family or vicinity, without knowing the disadvantages of delaying the same.

Dr Ashwani Maichand lists some of the disadvantages of delaying the knee replacement surgery:

  1. It results in deterioration of the joint.
  2. Due to overloading, the other knee also becomes weak.
  3. The pain only increases with time, leading to reduced mobility.
  4. Due to persistent limping, the patient starts having degeneration in lumbar spine, leading to spine surgery.
  5. Risk of deformities developing inside and outside of the joint increases considerably.
  6. Bed-ridden patients start losing calcium, which can lead to osteoporosis.
  7. Due to minimum use of muscles, the patients can lose the muscle tone.
  8. It also leads to prolonged rehabilitation.
  9. Several risks arise with regard to surgical procedure.
  10. Complications tend to increase.

A number of researches have proved how important it is to time the replacement surgeries. Timing can determine the final outcome of the surgery. According to Dr Ashwani Maichand, as soon as the doctor advises a knee replacement surgery, the patient must go ahead with it. When the patient is healthy, he can recover very quickly. But, when he lives with it for years, it becomes very complex. So, it is important to perform the surgery rather than waiting for the problem to relent, as it will only increase with time.
