His rich experience of over three decades lists him among the leading orthopedic surgeons in India. Dr Ashwani Maichand’s expertise lies in handling the most complicated cases of knee, hip and shoulder replacement.

One such story is that of a 29-year-old man called Harjeet from Ambala. Around four years ago, Harjeet met a terrible road accident in which he was run over by a speeding SUV. The injury was so severe that the soft tissue over the left side of his hip got ripped apart and his bone was totally exposed. Also, multiple fractures were diagnosed on his left femur, left side of pelvis, and left hip joint. The bone fractures were already repaired using metal plates and screws at some other hospital by the time Harjeet approached Dr Ashwani Maichand.

After a thorough examination, Dr Ashwani Maichand found that the hip of the patient was absolutely fused. Also, his knee joint was so stiff that there was no movement at all. The condition was so severe that Harjeet could not sit, drive, or use a western toilet. Dr Maichand also discovered that Harjeet could barely take a few steps, which was followed by unbearable pain in the back. Also, he was limping as his leg was short by 2 cm.

A number of X-rays showed no improvement in the damaged hip joint post the surgery that Harjeet had undergone at some hospital before consulting Dr Ashwani Maichand. The fracture in the left side of his pelvis also was not yet united. Not to miss, the patient had a long plate (DHS) fixed in the left femur.

There were many challenges before Dr Ashwani Maichand and his team. The patient had one stiff knee joint and one non-moving hip joint, along with a huge implant and half-broken pelvic bone. However, Dr Ashwani Maichand’s experience and the expertise of the team kept them determined to successfully conduct the operation. The surgery took 7 hours as it included five procedures - Soft Tissue Flap Rotation for the exposed left pelvic bone, Implant Removal (DHS Plate), Knee Mobilization, Hip Reconstruction (acetabalum), and Non-Cemented Ceramic Hip Replacement. A total of six units of blood were transfused during the operation. Harjeet was kept under observation for 24 hours. Right from the next day, Harjeet could walk with help.

His recovery so far has been exponential. Not only his limb length is resorted, but he can also sit comfortably, use a western toilet, and bend his knee up to 100 degree.
